It was a windy day but the diner was so warm we got ice cream floats, cheeks flushed, drawing on napkins and kicking each other under the table, laughing. We took the long way back, winding along the river, picking up beautiful leaves, the stone that looked like your grandmother’s profile.
We walked way out over the water, watching a belted kingfisher buzz and dive, and later, the rush of wings overhead. Between us and sunset clouds tinged with autumn gold, snowy geese headed south, waving to us fellow travelers headed home.
