We spent the day in the city, exploring like tourists holding hands. We found a twenty dollar bill in a book of Mary Oliver poems at the feminist bookstore, the one with big roses painted on the walls. We spent it at that bar famous for its collection of plants, drinking cocktails that tasted of anise, cinnamon, citrus among the vines, toasting each other after each round. We went to a little revival theater, the lobby all red leather and brass, filled our pockets with Sno-Caps and Gummi Bears and watched their production of Empire Records, a teenaged cover band playing the soundtrack live. It was all a wonder, we the most magnificent of all: our giddiness and glee reflecting back between each other, compounding, magnifying, multiplying joy, spreading throughout the crowd until everyone was grinning, a thousand mirrors shining, heads close, hearts open, smiles like beginnings, the start of something new.
